Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a major technology innovator and global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its family of 65 nanometer (nm) single-chip Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switch solutions for small-to-medium-sized business (SMB) applications are now shipping in volume production to major OEM customers including Allied Telesis, Cisco, D-Link and NETGEAR. This highly integrated switch family includes 5-, 8-, 16- and 24-port configurations, with full Layer 2 (L2) switching, to address the feature set and port density requirements of today's SMB networks.
Broadcom's green SMB switches provide an impressive reduction in total system power -- as much as 40 percent -- and can help reduce overall system cost by eliminating the need for a fan and enabling the use of a less costly power supply. As a result, the Broadcom SMB switches can reduce power and enable a lower bill-of-materials (BOM) cost for GbE switches in the SMB market.
Broadcom's single-chip 65nm GbE SMB switch family, announced April 2008, consists of the BCM53310 series, for unmanaged and smart switches, and the BCM53118, for unmanaged switches and routers. A third product for wireless home routers and residential gateways, the BCM53115, was announced in November 2007 and rounds out the product family. For the eco-conscious consumer, this family provides 'green' networking by enabling features such as automatic shut down of GbE ports that are not in use, and automatic adjustment of power levels based on cable length. Broadcom SMB switch products also use materials that are free of toxins.
